Windup

Created in real-time with Unity, Windup elevates storytelling in nine minutes of animated texture, depth, and heart.

This animated short film showcases what it is possible to create with a real-time animation pipeline. The team used regular home-office desktop computers and Unity’s capabilities as they are today; only the shaders are custom. 

Windup highlights the fragile nature of life, love, and what it means to never give up.

Behind Windup

Unity for animation and cinematics

Unity brings real-time workflows to animation content creators – speeding up traditional pipelines and giving artists, producers, and directors more opportunities for creative freedom, fast feedback, and artistic iteration on a flexible platform. With Unity, real-time production is a reality.

Real-time high-fidelity graphics

Windup used the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) and Shader Graph to achieve the final look of the project, including the fabric and hair. The team also used Light Layers for the environment and character lighting, Vertex Position input to animate the leaves, and VFX Graph for the frost and floating dust.

Global collaboration

Windup was a side project created by a diverse team of men and women, distributed across eight countries and working mostly from home. The team used the Subversion (SVN) version control system to manage their files, and they stayed in sync through Zoom, Slack and SyncSketch.
