Trailer for Void Crew: Maximum Calamity Update
How Hutlihut Games Is Taking Vivox Voice Chat to New Dimensions

Vivox is Unity's Voice and Text chat service for multiplayer communication. Vivox enables reliable, cross-play communication to improve cooperation, competition, and retention.
Void Crew from Hutlihut Games (the winner of Best Multiplayer Game at the Unity Awards 2025) is a co-op space adventure for one to six players. Built around shared responsibility, it puts players aboard a spaceship where teamwork is essential, especially when missions descend into panic and chaos.
Recently, the studio released Maximum Calamity, the biggest update yet for Void Crew. The update introduces a host of new threats, including black holes which warp and distort reality as players draw near… including the crew’s voices.

Since Void Crew’s inception, voice chat was never just a support feature. In a co-op game where players rely on each other constantly, communication is absolutely necessary to deepen immersion, reinforce roles, and become part of the experience itself.
Back when Void Crew was in its early stages of development, the team worked closely with Unity to explore how Vivox could add something players wouldn’t get from any standard party chat: dimension. As Hutlihut Game Design Lead Laurids Binderup explains: “We believe voice chat should enhance gameplay and immersion. Only that way players use it, instead of Discord."

Rather than simply recreating flat voice channels, Hutlihut wanted voice chat to feel integrated with the action. In Void Crew, communication reflects what players are doing, where they are, and what is going wrong in real time—helping sell the tension, fantasy, and chaos of keeping a spaceship together under pressure. In turn, this adds to expressive, dynamic, and memorable gameplay. As the team puts it: “Consider the game a stage on which the players play out their role, and provide them with tools to increase the quality of the drama.”
That is where immersive communication becomes powerful in Void Crew. Voice does more than carry instructions; It helps players inhabit their roles, react to each other in real time, and experience the tension of a mission together. The result is communication that supports both gameplay and atmosphere at once.
Immersive voice chat in Void Crew
As Void Crew expanded from PC to consoles, Hutlihut wanted to keep the immersive voice chat experience consistent across platforms, preserving the same immersive communication design players know and love. For a multiplayer game where communication is part of the core experience, that continuity matters.
For developers building multiplayer experiences in Unity, Hutlihut’s work shows how Vivox can help turn communication into something more immersive, more expressive, and more central to the player experience. In a co-op game built on shared action and shared stakes, that can make all the difference.
