Light Field Video
What is Light Field Video?
Light Field Video extends light field photography to moving images, allowing for post-production manipulation of focus, perspective, and depth, creating more realistic and interactive immersive video experiences with enhanced spatial understanding.
How does work?
This technology overcomes the traditional limitations of conventional video by capturing volumetric information about a scene, enabling unprecedented creative control during post-production and more natural viewing experiences.
Early implementations combined traditional camera systems with light field capture devices to achieve workable frame rates (conventional light field cameras initially struggled with low frame rates around 3FPS). The resulting footage contains rich spatial data that allows viewers to move within the captured environment with six degrees of freedom, creating a more natural and immersive experience than traditional 360° video.
How is Light Field Video used?
For developers building interactive experiences, light field video offers new possibilities for merging real-world footage with digital elements in mixed reality applications.
The technology enables more convincing depth cues, focus effects, and perspective shifts that closely mimic human visual perception, significantly enhancing presence and reducing the artificial feel of conventional video in immersive contexts. As processing capabilities advance, light field video continues to evolve toward more accessible production workflows while maintaining its unique advantages for immersive content creation.
