Making real-time 3D careers accessible
We’re leading a collaborative effort to establish baseline standards for real-time 3D (RT3D) jobs so that job seekers can understand what skills to develop, educators can build relevant learning experiences, and employers can identify job-ready candidates.
Standardizing job descriptions to increase transparency
Universal Job Profiles (UJPs) offer comprehensive, industry-approved insights into specific roles across real-time 3D industries. They cover job details, responsibilities, organizational contexts, skill requirements, tools, application processes, and career development resources.
UJPs are split into contextual and actionable sections. The first section explains a specific industry role in depth. The second section outlines required skills and provides resources for developing them and preparing for the role.
UJPs provide clear job expectations and affirm candidate proficiency in required skills, supporting effective team-building and industry standardization. Employers can also become involved in shaping UJPs by joining the Employer Advisory Board.
UJPs have a dedicated section for learning resources that will be populated with all available aligned learning content. If you create a course that aligns with a Universal Job Profile, you can submit it for inclusion in the learning resource list for free.
VR developers craft immersive virtual reality experiences by teaming up with designers, artists, and QA experts. They build VR apps, manage interactions, optimize performance, and guarantee a high-quality virtual experience.
AR designers create captivating augmented reality experiences by fusing creative ideas with UX principles. They collaborate with developers and artists to design UI, use 3D assets for AR environments, and ensure a seamless user experience.
Junior programmers aid in developing interactive applications using real-time graphics. They partner with senior programmers and designers to implement game mechanics, debug code, solve tech issues, and adapt to evolving technologies.
A QA (Quality Assurance) tester is responsible for ensuring that video games meet established quality standards and functionality without issues. They repeatedly play and test the game to find any problems and document discovered issues for the development team.
The Employer Advisory Board
The Employer Advisory Board shapes Universal Job Profiles, supported by experts from various RT3D companies. UJPs provide clear job expectations, guide early careers, assist educators, and help identify suitable candidates, all to ensure alignment with industry requirements.
EAB members will be expected to dedicate approximately 12 hours per year to EAB tasks.
Throughout the year, members will be contacted to provide information and feedback on in-progress Universal Job Profiles and help determine what the next profile should be. This work will be primarily accomplished through asynchronous document review and feedback forms, as well as occasional optional synchronous virtual meetings.
Detailed tasks are outlined below:
- Make subject matter experts available for informational interviews during the research phase for Universal Job Profiles, as resources allow and schedules permit. These experts should either hold the role themselves, have held it in the past, manage people with that role, or have experience recruiting for that role.
- Participate in Employer Advisory Board Week, where synchronous meetings will take place for the final review and approval of upcoming Universal Job Profiles.
- Provide asynchronous feedback on Universal Job Profile drafts during the iteration process.
- Receive invitations to engage in optional efforts such as certification reviews, where your input can shape industry standards.
- Participate occasionally in talks, discussions, or presentations, contributing to industry discourse when time and circumstances permit.
- Keep us informed of any changes to company offerings (such as internships, courses, resources, etc.) that are included in Universal Job Profiles so that we can keep all materials and resources current.
Showcasing company resources: As a board member, you will have the opportunity to showcase any related resources your company offers, such as learning experiences, internships, and apprenticeships. These resources will be prominently featured alongside the corresponding Universal Job Profiles, ensuring that job seekers can easily access valuable opportunities within your organization.
Public recognition and visibility: Members will be publicly credited for their contributions, with their company name and logo on all Employer Advisory Board-related materials including landing pages on the Unity website. All companies that participate in the development of Universal Job Profiles will be credited within the profile itself. Where possible, direct links to company websites will be added.
Access to a growing pool of ready-to-hire talent: Members will receive special access to a pool of job-ready candidates that use Universal Job Profiles to prepare for specific roles within RT3D industries as they become available. Connecting with this talent pool means you can easily find candidates who are verified as meeting industry standards, simplifying your hiring process and increasing the chances of finding the right fit for your team.
Industry leadership and future talent investment: EAB membership serves as a powerful testament to your company’s commitment to the vitality of RT3D industries and the development of future talent. By actively participating in shaping Universal Job Profiles and contributing to the growth of a qualified talent pool, your company demonstrates industry leadership. This visible dedication not only enhances your company’s reputation, but also positions it as a forward-thinking contributor to the long-term health and success of the industry. Joining the EAB is not just a strategic move for your immediate hiring needs; it’s a bold statement showcasing your investment in the industry’s future and the emerging professionals who will shape it.
EAB partners have a history of hiring successful RT3D developers and are passionate about shaping a positive future for the industry by sharing their insights and practices. Partners must:
- Employ at least one RT3D developer or team of developers, ideally with intent to hire more.
- Have shipped at least one RT3D powered product, or be scheduled to do so. Internal company tools qualify for this point.
- Be willing to share their insights in relation to their expectations of RT3D job candidates (for example, required skill level, knowledge areas, experience, etc).
- Be willing to connect us to members of their development team with relevant subject matter expertise during research phases as schedules allow.
- Be able to provide at least one representative to review content and advise on job profiles.
Ideal points of contact to represent the company are people who are deeply involved in the recruitment and/or development processes. These roles include:
- Recruiters
- Hiring managers
- Directors
- Producers
- Senior development team members
Companies can have more than one representative participate in EAB activities if desired.
