Unity Technologies and DeNA/Ngmoco Collaborating on The Drowning

Dec 7, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Dec 7, 2012 - Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, and DeNA Co., Ltd. announced a collaboration to boost Unity's technology and create a game that pushes the bounds of mobile graphics capabilities. The two companies are working together to implement cutting edge mobile technology in DeNA's upcoming first-person shooter game The Drowning.

Unity Technologies engineers worked closely with developers at DeNA's Scattered Entertainment studio in Stockholm, Sweden for hands on technical support during the production of The Drowning to allow DeNA to leverage the technology in new ways and use those findings to benefit the nearly 1.5 million developers that constitute the worldwide Unity community.

"This kind of technical cooperation is very important for us," said David Helgason, CEO, Unity Technologies. "It's easy to sit in a lab and dream up awesome technological improvements, but by pushing the envelope with great game studios we can rapidly improve Unity."

The Drowning's development team is made up of industry veterans who have worked on best-selling console games such as Halo, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Far Cry 2, and Mirror's Edge. The team will redefine the first-person shooter genre for touch devices by eliminating the need for virtual sticks with intuitive touch controls.

"Working with Unity during the development of The Drowning has given us the technological tools to craft an incredibly beautiful game that is sure to be the most visually advanced mobile game on the market," said Ben Cousins, general manager of Scattered Entertainment and head of DeNA's European studio operations.

The DeNA team has been one of the driving forces behind testing and improvement of the Mecanim animation system, released with Unity 4 in November. Unity Technologies isn't a stranger to close technical relationships with developers having worked with Luma Arcade on the newly released mobile hack and slash action title Bladeslinger and Madfinger Games on the hit mobile FPS Shadowgun. Both titles have resulted directly in the enhancement and perfection of technologies in Unity such as light probes and mobile shadows.
