Unity Educational Grant License Eligibility Criteria

Education Grant License

The Unity Education Grant License (‘EGL”) gives qualifying institutions multi-seat access to the educational version of Unity's real-time 3D development tool compatible with institutional computers and servers at no cost.* It is available globally for institutions that qualify subject to the Grant Limit (see Section B below). Unity reserves the right to determine whether an institution qualifies for eligibility for EGL. The EGL is used for learning, teaching, training and empowers students to create immersive experiences for any industry.

A. Institutions that qualify for EGL

Institutions that qualify for EGL include:

  1. Educational institutions accredited by an authorized governmental agency within its applicable local, state, provincial, federal, or national jurisdiction and has the primary purpose of teaching its enrolled students, or that is otherwise separately approved in writing by Unity.
    1. Government-accredited public or private universities, colleges and vocational training centers that grant government-approved degrees, diplomas or certificates
    2. Accredited public or private elementary and/or secondary schools providing full-time instruction for grades (levels) anywhere from kindergarten up to 12 (any, a “School”**).
    3. Education consortiums, districts, ministries, departments of education where each member is a School;
    4. Accredited research institutions with a grant less than $200,000 USD using Unity; or
    5. Administrative offices or boards of education of other qualified institutions.

  1. Non-profit institutions (i.e. libraries, hospitals, museums) verified by Unity or its partners.
    1. US-based nonprofits may access EGL at a discounted cost through a third party partner, Techsoup (or another entity as notified by Unity).
    2. Non-US based nonprofits may access licenses through Unity directly.

B. Grant Fund Limit

If an institution qualifies for the EGL (Section A) and wishes to apply its grant funds to a project using Unity for non-educational purposes (i.e. not primarily for teaching and learning purposes), such grant amount made available to the entire qualifying institution must not exceed $200,000 USD (“Grant Limit”). If the Grant Limit is exceeded, the institution will need to purchase a Unity Plan appropriate for its use case.

C. Institutions that do not qualify for EGL

Institutions that do not qualify for EGL include, without limitation, the following, unless separately approved by Unity in writing:

  • Hospitals based in the U.S or Canada (irrespective of non-profit status)
  • Training centers;
  • Religious institutions, hospitals, health care systems and libraries that are operating for profit; or
  • Research institutions or laboratories that are affiliated with a qualifying institution (as described in Section A) using Unity software for research, industry, or commercial use, who should use Unity Pro or Enterprise, or Unity Industry, as applicable pursuant to the Unity Terms of Service, Unity Editor Software Terms and Unity Industry Terms of Service.

(*) Unity reserves the right to update the list of qualifying institutions in Section A and to charge for EGL at any time and without prior notice. Further, use of EGL is subject to the Terms of Service. Amongst other restrictions in the Terms of Service as of the date of this announcement, EGL may be used solely for educational purposes and may not be used for any commercial or research purposes.
