Unity Technologies Releases Whitepaper on Best Practices for Adopting Third-Party Game Development Technology

Aug 3, 2015

San Francisco, CA – August 3, 2015 – Unity Technologies has today announced a new whitepaper titled, “A Guide to Moving From Internal Game Engine Technology.” The whitepaper, which is now available for download, presents valuable insights from some of the most respected and experienced developers around the world, on why and how they made the move from using in-house technology to embracing external engines.

From a one-man team that hires occasional contract staff to those working at 9,000-headcount game developers, third-party game engines are being adopted across the globe at many different studios that all share a heritage using custom technology. In this report, nine studios were invited to share their insights on what motivated their teams to look beyond established in-house tech, how they best adopted a new engine, and what the advantages and challenges have been. For example:

“At Square Enix Montréal, we have a strong creative culture,” said Martin Ruel, Technical Director at Square Enix Montréal. “Even when we were making console games, we were using the Unity engine to support our prototyping phase: it was super easy to use, to create behavior and to integrate assets into our prototypes. Moving to Unity for mobile really helped us focus on crafting compelling experiences instead of spending critical time building engines.”

“I think that the main reason we chose Unity was that the engine has a very powerful animation system, and we were making an animation-driven game,” explains Christian Schell, Senior Lead Programmer on Assassin’s Creed Identity at Ubisoft Blue Byte. “Cross-platform support was also important, and we wanted to support a lot of different platforms. The engine is easy to learn, and the editor is easy to extend and modify.”

In addition to providing powerful tips and best practices, the new ‘Guide to Moving From Internal Game Engine Technology’ also offers insight into:

  • How to gain creative freedom while increasing efficiency and reaching larger audiences through the use of third party development tools
  • How to integrate third-party tools into the design process and production pipeline
  • How to realize the potential of a large return on investment when using third party tools
Wherever developers are in the decision-making process, this report will provide all of the necessary information to help guide them in the right direction.
