  • Unity Plus (Annual revenue/ funding cap of $200k).
  • Unity Pro (No revenue cap).
  • Unity Enterprise (No revenue cap, minimum 20 seat purchase).

For further information, see the Knowledge Base article: What subscription tiers are available?

How much does a subscription to Unity cost, and for how long can I subscribe?

You can find a full list of Unity's license subscriptions and payment plans on the Unity store and in this Knowledge Base article: What subscription tiers are available?

Does Unity take royalties?

No, Unity is royalty-free. We don't charge on a per-title basis or require a revenue share model.

For more information, see this Knowledge Base article: Does Unity charge any additional fees for using the Unity Editor?

Do I own the content I create with my subscription?

Yes. You fully own the content you create with Unity, even if you cancel your subscription.

Do you have a specially priced license for students?

Students enrolled in an accredited educational institution and of legal age to consent to the collection and processing of their personal information (e.g., age 13 in the US, 16 in the EU) are eligible for the Unity Student plan. If you are an educator or academic institution interested in using Unity at school, sign up for the Unity Education Grant License or the Unity Educator plan.

For more information, see this Knowledge Base article: How do I access the Unity Student plan?

How do I pay for my subscription?

The following payment methods are available:

Credit card
PayPal
Alipay
UnionPay
BoaCompra (restrictions apply)

To pay by invoice, please get in touch with a Unity Sales representative.

For more information, please see this Knowledge Base article: How do I purchase a Unity license?

On what day is my monthly payment due?

The date you sign up for your subscription is the same date your payment is due each month. For example, if you begin your subscription on the 15th of the month, you’ll be charged for subsequent months on the 15th.

Can I combine different payment plans?

Since it's not possible to purchase multiple subscriptions on the same Organization, it's also not possible to combine different payment plans. For example, you cannot have a 12-month prepaid subscription & a pay monthly subscription on the same Organization.

For more information, please see this Knowledge Base article: Can I switch my subscription payment plan?

In what countries is tax charged on a subscription?

Unity collects consumption tax on subscriptions where it is required by law. Please get in touch with your local tax authority for details in your country of residence.

VAT and tax numbers are given by local tax authorities and allow you to avoid paying consumption taxes from purchases made on any Unity store page if you are exempt from doing so.

For information about adding your tax number to your account, see the Knowledge Base article: How do I add my tax number?

Where can I read the release notes for Unity?

You can find the full release notes for the most recent Unity release on the What's New page.

You can find release notes for all previous Unity versions using the drop-down menu on the right side of the same page.

Where can I find the Unity Roadmap?

The Unity Platform Roadmap can be found on the website here. The Roadmap is broken down into different sections to give a more granular view of what's happening where and when. In addition to the Roadmap, each section allows users to submit their own ideas and feedback!

For more information, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I submit feedback about Unity?

Can I combine content I create with Unity Personal with content created in Educational versions of Unity at my school?

Can third-party content (such as user-generated content, game mods, and Asset Store packages) developed in Unity Personal be used to develop a game in Unity Plus or Pro, and vice versa?

Yes, you are free to license content from a third party for use in developing your game, irrespective of which version of Unity that content was created in.

For more information, please see the Knowledge Base articles:
Can I use 3rd party content made in a different subscription tier to develop my game?
Can I use assets from the Asset Store in my commercial game?

Can we use the code/art/assets in Unity Technologies' example projects?

Assets in our tutorial and example projects are well known, and therefore we recommend you don’t use them in commercial games and content. They are meant to be used in non-commercial content for educational purposes only.

For more detailed information about asset licensing, please see the Knowledge Base article: Can I use assets from the Asset Store in my commercial game?

How many machines can I activate my Unity license on?

One seat of Unity Plus, Pro, or Enterprise can be activated on up to two machines at a time.

Please see the following Knowledge Base article for more information: I would like to have more than two activations on my license. What can I do?

Can I activate two different versions of Unity on the same machine?

You can have as many versions of the Unity Editor installed and activated on your machine as you need with the help of the Unity Hub.

To find out more about the Unity Hub, see the Knowledge Base article: What is the Unity Hub?

How can I release the license from the machine I am using?

For the full steps on returning your activations, see the Knowledge Base article: How do I return the activations on my Pro/ Plus/ Enterprise license?

How do I find the serial number to activate my subscription?

Serial numbers, also known as license keys, let the Unity Editor know what level of access to give each user. This is why it is required as part of the activation process. Personal Edition users do not need a serial number to activate – they have a different option to select during the activation process. For Pro, Plus, and Enterprise users, you can find your license key via your ID account by clicking My Seats to the left of the screen in your account settings.

Please see the following Knowledge Base article for more information: How do I find my license serial number?

How do I activate my subscription?

The fastest way to activate your license is online. Please see the following Knowledge Base article for guidance on activating your license: How do I activate my license?

How do I access the consoles?

In order to develop to locked platforms such as Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch, you need to apply for developer status with each console's manufacturer and have a current Unity Pro or Enterprise subscription (Xbox and PlayStation only).

For full details, see the Knowledge Base articles below:
How do I develop to Xbox platforms?
How do I develop to PlayStation® platforms?
What platforms are supported by Unity?

What do I get with a subscription to Unity?

All Unity subscriptions include access to our powerful, real-time 3D Engine alongside various services to help manage, operate, and monetize your projects.

For the full details on what's included with each subscription, take a look at the Compare Plans table on the Unity webstore.

What is the “Made with Unity” splash screen?

The Unity Splash Screen is uniform across all platforms. It displays promptly while the first Scene loads asynchronously in the background. This is different from your own introductory screens or animations, which can take time to appear due to Unity having to load the entire engine and first Scene before displaying them.

The Unity Editor allows you to configure a Splash Screen for your project. The level to which you can customize the Unity Splash Screen depends on your Unity subscription. Depending on whether you have Unity Personal, Unity Plus, or Unity Pro, you can disable the Unity Splash Screen entirely, disable the Unity logo, and add your own logos, among other options.

For more information about configuring the Splash Screen, see our Documentation page.

What currencies can I pay in?

Unity supports the following currencies: USD, EUR, JPY, KRW, CNY, and BRL (restrictions apply).

Our primary payment gateway is WorldPay, which covers most markets.

For more information, please see the Knowledge Base article: What currency are subscriptions paid in?

I just subscribed but I need to assign a seat. How do I do that?

To access your new subscription, you will need to assign yourself a seat to receive a serial key and activate your license. If you purchased the subscription on behalf of an organization, you need to assign each user a seat before they can activate their license.

Please see the following Knowledge Base article for a step-by-step guide: How do I assign a seat to a user?

I am seeing the error 'Your serial number is not valid’ when attempting to activate through the Unity Hub. What does this mean?

The most common cause for this error is the license key running out of activations. If you have recently updated your OS or changed any hardware, this can alter the hardware ID to which the Unity License File (.ULF) is attached, effectively making the current .ULF redundant.

Another cause for the error 'Your serial number is not valid' is a connection issue between your machine and the Unity license servers.

For more information, please see the Knowledge base article: I am seeing the error 'Your serial number is not valid’ when attempting to activate through the Unity Hub. What does this mean?

Will my project break if I upgrade to a new version of Unity?

We always recommend that users back up any of their projects before upgrading them to a new version of Unity.

For more information, see the documentation Upgrade Guides.

Can I use my license offline?

Yes, you can use your Unity license offline by manually activating. However, some services such as the Package Manager and Collaborate are not available offline.

For more information, please see the Knowledge base article: How do I activate my license?

Can I sell or transfer ownership of my license to another person?

Unity licenses are associated with the Organization on which a subscription was purchased. This means that if a user leaves an Organization, the license seat can be revoked, then re-assigned to another user within the same Organization by a Manager or Owner.

Please note that subscriptions cannot be transferred from one Organization to another.

For more information, please take a look at the following Knowledge Base articles:
What is a 'Seat'?
How can I revoke a seat in my Organization?

Renewing, upgrading, or downgrading subscriptions*

Can I cancel my subscription before the end of my commitment period?

Software subscriptions are not cancellable during your commitment period and are non-refundable. This means that once you commit to a subscription for a certain period of time, you are obligated to pay all payments owing for that period. Even if you stop making payments and your license is shut down, you are still obligated to pay the outstanding payment(s) for your subscription period. Please see the Unity Terms of Service, which include additional terms for the Unity Software, for more details.

Can I upgrade my subscription?

Yes, you can upgrade your subscription to an available higher tier via your Unity ID. You will begin a new commitment term when you upgrade, and any prepaid amount remaining from the original term will be credited towards your upgrade payment.

For more information, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I upgrade my subscription tier?

Can I downgrade my subscription during my commitment period?

During your commitment period, it is not possible to downgrade your subscription to a lower tier. You can upgrade your subscription to a higher tier whilst in your commitment period. However, you cannot reduce the number of seats if you upgrade.

Please see the following Knowledge Base article for more information: How do I upgrade my subscription Tier?

Can I change the number of seats in my subscription?

If you are the Owner of a Unity Organization with a Unity subscription associated, you can add seats to your subscription via your Unity ID. For further information, please see the Knowledge Base article: How do I increase the number of seats on my subscription plan?

It is not possible to reduce the number of seats on a subscription that is still within its initial 12-month commitment period. For further information on this, please see the article: How do I reduce the number of seats on my subscription plan?

Will my subscription automatically renew?

Yes, your subscription will automatically renew with the same commitment term and payment frequency as your original subscription, unless you change your renewal settings or plan option in your Unity ID before your next scheduled renewal date.

For further details, please see the Knowledge Base article: Will my Unity subscription renew automatically when I have finished my 12-month contract?

Blog commenting

General*

What is Viafoura?

Viafoura is a company that provides an easy-to-use comments feature for online communities. Comments on Unity blogs are powered by Viafoura Conversations, which has helped us avoid spam comments and provide additional commenting features to our users.

Why do I need to create, or log in with a Unity ID to comment?

We are enhancing the user experience on our blog by enabling users like you to have real conversations. Signing in with the Unity ID login helps reduce unwanted conversations and spam content in the comments.

What are legacy comments?

Legacy comments are comments imported from the old version of the blog to the current version.

For more information, please see the article: What are legacy comments?

Why are my comments anonymous?

Most comments are posted under the publisher’s full name. Anonymous comments appear in cases where comments are not linked to any account. If your name is included with your account details, it will show in the body of the comment.

Why doesn’t Unity consolidate the new and old comments?

With the new commenting system, Viafoura, your user profile page only shows a list of new comments made on the new version of the blog. Even if you commented on the old version of the blog using a particular email address and then use the same email address to create a Unity ID account and comment on the new version of the blog, your comments from both systems will not be consolidated into a single list.

For more information, please see the article: Does Unity consolidate the new and old comments on the blog?

I can't post on the forums, help!

Before you post on a certain board, it is best to refer to the Unity Community Code of Conduct, where the restrictions are outlined before posting. This may explain why your post has not appeared after submission.

If your post is being recorded as spam or you are having trouble posting in the forums, please contact Customer Service with the contents of your post, so they can investigate this further.

For more information, see the Knowledge Base article: I can't post on the Forums!

The forums tell me my post looks like Spam, it won’t let me post at all.

If your post is being marked as spam or you are having trouble posting in the forums, please get in touch with Customer Service with the content of your post, so that they can investigate further.

See the Knowledge Base article for more information about posting on the Unity Forums: I can't post on the forums!

I’ve received warning points or been banned and I don’t know why.

Moderators will usually only issue a ban when a user has violated the rules several times and has previously been warned.

For more information, see the Knowledge Base article: Why has my Forums account been banned?

To discuss an action taken, you can reach out to one of the Community Managers. If your account has been banned and you are not sure why, please get in touch with Customer Service who can review your case.

I want to become a moderator.

We do not have a process in place in which Forum users can apply to become a moderator. Our community managers will approach those users who are exceedingly helpful and have a great online presence to become moderators if positions are available.

There’s a technical problem with the forums.

If the forums are under maintenance, check the Unity Twitter account for updates. If the forums appear broken, i.e., a cosmetic issue, you can create a forum post in Discussion or contact one of our Community Managers Maru and Leonhard.

I have a suggestion for a new forum/rule.

You can create a thread in Discussion. We're always up for hearing your suggestions.
