The opportunity

The Data Platform team at Unity builds the software foundations that allow product, machine learning, and analytics teams to make sense of data at scale. We design and develop the core services, APIs, and frameworks that enable fast, reliable, and consistent access to data across Unity Ads. Our work supports critical adtech use cases including segmentation, optimization, and real time bidding.

We are looking for a Staff Data Platform Engineer with deep expertise in Java and distributed systems. In this role you will take ownership of major platform components, take part in architectural decisions, and mentor engineers while delivering software that makes Unity's data ecosystem more powerful and easier to use.

What you'll be doing

Design, build, and evolve backend services, libraries, and frameworks that form the foundation of Unity's data platform
Define and own APIs and developer facing tools that improve how teams ingest, process, and use data
Lead design reviews, architectural discussions, and technical planning, ensuring the platform is reliable, extensible, and future ready
Mentor engineers across the team, raising the bar for code quality, testing, and software craftsmanship
Collaborate with product, ML, and data engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable platform features

What we're looking for

8 or more years of software engineering experience with strong proficiency in Java and backend development
Proven track record of designing and delivering large scale software systems or frameworks used by multiple teams
Expertise in building and maintaining APIs, ideally with gRPC, REST, and schema technologies such as Protobuf or Avro
Strong knowledge of distributed systems and event driven architectures
Ability to drive cross team initiatives, align stakeholders, and make pragmatic tradeoffs that balance scale, performance, and developer experience

You might also have

Experience with streaming frameworks such as Apache Flink and Spark
Background in building SDKs, developer platforms, or internal frameworks adopted across organizations
Familiarity with large scale data platform challenges such as ingestion, enrichment, and schema management
