Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Game Understanding

The opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to lead the development of the foundational AI systems within the Unity engine for game understanding, empowering creators to build more engaging content and have the games better discovered by targeted audiences. You will drive innovation in understanding game semantics, player experience, and how gamers perceive interactive content. Your work will translate cutting-edge machine learning research into production-ready systems that demonstrably improve workflows, recommendations, and in-engine intelligence.

What you'll be doing

• Research, design, and implement the game understanding models.
• Collaborate across internal teams to deliver production use cases.
• End-to-end lead the high-impact initiatives, from data curation and model development, to the production deployment.
• Contribute to the long-term vision and roadmap for Unity’s agentic AI offerings, ensuring modularity, usability, and performance across platforms.
• Establish and champion best practices for model quality, simulation-based evaluation, and ML/AI safety within real-time systems.

What we're looking for

• Advanced degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience developing ML systems, ideally within real-time or interactive production environments.
• Experience with multi-modal foundation model, multi-agent systems, orchestration, or AI tool integration.
• Track record of implementing research in one or more of the following fields: LLM, behavior modeling, reinforcement learning, multi-modal model, or agentic systems.
• Excel at identifying promising research directions and turning ideas into working codes.
• Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Go, Java) and familiarity with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
• Strong system design skills and the ability to architect performant, scalable ML systems.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams including ML researchers, game engine developers, designers, and product managers.

• Passion for the gaming industry and AI applications in games.
• Familiarity with game development workflows.
• Experience working on large-scale Ads systems.
• Publications or open-source contributions in LLM, reinforcement learning, agent-based modeling, or related areas.
