Early access to new Unity certifications

The Unity Certified Associate: Programmer and Unity Certified Associate: Artist exams are currently in development. This beta exam administration allows us to collect statistics and see how candidates respond to and perform on test questions. You will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on individual test questions, if you choose to do so.

Following the beta exam period, we will make final adjustments to test questions, if necessary, and select the best questions to include on the final certification exam. We will also calibrate and determine score bands. If you obtain a passing score, you will be awarded the Unity Certified Associate: Programmer or Unity Certified Associate: Artist certification, depending on the exam you pass.

Exam Scoring and Certification Award

Your scores will become available approximately 90 days after you complete the beta exam, after the team has calibrated and determined passing scores. If you have a passing score, you will be awarded your certification and given access to the digital badge and certificate.

What’s on the Programmer beta exam?

You can expect to see questions across these topics:

Unity programming

  • Evaluate code for integration into an existing system created/architected by a lead
  • Make decisions required to prototype new concepts
  • Determine code that would accomplish a specified interaction or programming logic
  • Decide how to implement scene management and transitions
  • Apply basic data persistence within a runtime session
  • Given a situation, determine proper usage and application of the Unity API
  • Decide the appropriate properties, scripts, and components of GameObjects for required tasks
  • Apply concepts required to write code with basic inheritance and interfaces
  • Choose the appropriate data structures for a specific situation
  • Choose the appropriate data types for a specific situation
  • Identify the steps required to deploy a basic build

UI

  • Apply concepts required to lay out a user interface
  • Identify the process required to bind data on the UI to application data
  • Decide how to capture and respond to UI input using the Event System
  • Decide how to create the menu flow in an application state

 

Debugging

  • Troubleshoot code that fails to perform as expected
  • Troubleshoot common compilation bugs 
  • Troubleshoot runtime exceptions
  • Determine techniques required to refactor and improve code
  • Determine techniques required to profile and debug trivial performance issues

 

Asset management

  • Identify the process required to create a prefab from art and code
  • Identify properties of nested prefabs and prefab variants
  • Identify the primary purposes of version control when working with Unity

What’s on the Artist beta exam?

You can expect to see questions across these topics:

Asset management

  • Import and adjust Import Settings on assets including but not limited to rigged objects, tangents, associated textures, and target/blend shapes
  • Modify assets using the Inspector, including but not limited to scripted components, animation, and materials 
  • Import and configure assets from the Unity Asset Store and/or custom packages
  • Utilize the Sprite Editor, Tilemaps, Unity UI, and UIElements 
  • Utilize Animator functions including states, parameters, transitions, and blend trees
  • Utilize Level of Detail (LOD)
  • Given a scenario, optimize scene art assets for different build targets including standalone, mobile and web

Scene content design

  • Create and implement assets using built-in 2D and 3D game objects as well as Pro Builder
  • Create finished-level art using terrain function, finished models, and colliders

Lighting, cameras, materials and effects

  • Create and edit materials including but not limited to different shaders such as different components of the Shader Graph
  • Identify advanced lighting including but not limited to soft shadow width, bias, flares, halos, occlusion layers, and light shapes
  • Given a scenario, determine the appropriate lighting techniques including global illumination, lightmapping, baking, reflection probe, and light probe
  • Create, modify and optimize particles and post-processing effects
  • Utilize multiple cameras, including but not limited to split-screen gaming, maps, map overlays, etc.
  • Given a scenario, determine the appropriate rendering pipeline that should be used

Take the beta exam using a PearsonVUE remote proctor or at an authorized test center (if available in your area). 

Your instructor or employer will provide you with an individual voucher code that allows you to schedule the exam with no fee.

The beta test is open to a select group of predetermined individuals. Your instructor or employer will provide you with a voucher code if you have been selected to participate.

Do I have to go to a testing center to take the exam?

No. You have the option to test via remote proctor at your own location using a secure internet connection and with a video camera, or you can test at your local PearsonVUE testing center if available in your area.
